A Starflyer Airbus A320-200, registration JA21MC performing flight 7G-42 from Fukuoka to Tokyo Haneda (Japan) with 104 people on board, was climbing through FL310 out of Fukuoka when the left engine (CFM56) lost power prompting the crew to stop the climb, drift down to FL240 and return to Fukuoka. The aircraft subsequently diverted to to Kitakyushu Airport for a safe landing on runway 36 about 75 minutes after departure.

The flight was cancelled, the passengers were rebooked onto other flights.
